For several years, a small dedicated group of sorors in Shreveport, Louisiana dreamed of chapter in their city. There were not adequate numbers to establish a chapter, so the group of women drove to meet with Nu Omega Chapter in Marshall, Texas. These faithful, loyal and dedicated charter members were sorors: Irma Green Jackson, Mae Etta Scott, and Nannie Lou Leech. The sorors were instrumental in getting Zurline Baker, Mabel Walker and Maxine Chambers initiated into Nu Omega Chapter. Later, Hattie Fletcher moved to Shreveport from North Carolina. On February 3, 1947, Soror Arnetta G. Wallace, Regional Director of South Central Region, organized Delta Lambda Omega (DLO) Chapter. The first officers were Basileus, Soror Irma Green Jackson; Anti-Basileus, Soror Mabel Walker; Grammateus, Soror Maxine Chambers, Anti-Grammateus, Soror Hattie Fletcher, and Tamiouchos, Soror Zurline Baker. Other chapter members were Sorors Nannie Lou Leech and Mae Etta Scott.
As the chapter’s membership continued to increase, its priorities and goals expanded, serving Caddo, Bossier and DeSoto parishes. The first fundraiser of Delta Lambda Omega Chapter was a piano concert by Lois Towles held at Central Colored High School’s auditorium on November 18, 1947.
The chapter was chartered in 1947 and has awarded scholarships yearly since 1949. The James Syleter Hall Senior Luncheon recognizes the top African American girls from local schools and during this event, awards ten competitive scholarships to college bound senior girls. Delta Lambda Omega is proud of our Sorors who have served on the international, regional and local levels. Soror Dorothy Johnson (IBW) served as the 15th South Central Director and Soror Tari T. Bradford served as the 22nd South Central Director. Other members have proudly served in other roles to support the organization, enhance the programs and implement strategic plans. To increase its programmatic outreach and financial standing, the chapter voted to create a 501 c (3) non-profit organization, Ivy Crown Community Services, Inc., which was chartered on December 31, 2008. Delta Lambda Omega currently serves as the sponsoring chapter of Tau Epsilon Chapter which was chartered on the campus of Louisiana State University-Shreveport on December 5, 2010. In June 2013, the chapter’s foundation purchased a two-story, brick building which serves as a community outreach center.
Delta Lambda Omega Chapter has enthusiastically, implemented a variety of programs, events and educational offerings to enhance the lives of community members. The chapter is widely known for the Shoe Bank program, which provides shoes and socks for underprivileged school age students. The chapter was acknowledged in 2018, as one of the longest operational programs by the national organization, Reading is Fundamental (RIF) for sponsoring and implementing reading programs and free book distributions for over 40 years. While celebrating Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s 112th Founders’ Day, a Gala was held in February of 2020 and a donation of $3,000.00 each was awarded to Grambling State University and Southern University Shreveport campus. During this event, Former Supreme Basileus Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson served as the guest speaker.
As a part of the Women’s health initiative, the chapter partnered with LSU Health Shreveport to host the Feist-Weiller mobile Mammography unit, which offered free mammograms in the parking lot of Ivy Crown. In support of the American Heart Association, the chapter’s 2020 Pink Goes Red activity featured heart healthy meals created by minority own small businesses, offered blood pressure checks and heart healthy exercises. This program was widely publicized by KTBS, the local ABC affiliate TV station. Additionally, a donation of $1,000.00 was made and members provided in-kind services of over $2,000.00. Members of DLO render service to a wide-range of community organizations including an Alzheimer’s support group at Morning Star MB Church Life Center, ongoing donations of eye glasses have been given to Lions Club International, and multiple donations of shoes in support of the Soles4Souls. Financial donations have been made to LSU Health Shreveport Diversity Affairs office, American Cancer Society, NW LA Sickle Cell Disease Association, NAACP, NW LA Food Bank and the Providence House (a family homeless shelter).
As the Spring of 2020 began to unfold, the unprecedented coronavirus has not allowed in-person large scale events to be held. Therefore, the chapter has become innovative and demonstrated responsiveness by switching to on-line platforms and implementing a variety of virtual programs. Delta Lambda Omega Chapter will continue to offer educational programs, academic scholarships, strive to make positive changes, and support like-minded organizations.
